Runningsnail Emergency Weather Radio

The radio that tells you a storm is coming before the power goes out.

Red-and-black emergency weather radio with its antenna extended, display reading "WEATHER 12:00 PM", sitting on a wooden bench in a cabin mudroom beside an old oil lantern. Green back door, muddy boots, flannel and boonie hat hanging on the wall, an ammo can on the floor.

How John uses it

This sits on the shelf by the back door next to the boots. When a front is coming through the ridge, I turn on the NOAA band and leave it running while I pull in the tarps and check the solar array. It’s been right about bad weather more times than the app on my phone — and the app on my phone needs a cell tower I don’t always have.

When the grid does flicker, this becomes my news source. No opinions, no ads, no feed. Just the forecast, the alerts, and whatever the shortwave chatter is that night. That’s the kind of information I trust in a blackout.

Why John recommends it

An emergency weather radio is one of those items that looks ridiculous until the moment it doesn’t. NOAA still broadcasts alerts for a reason. If you live anywhere the power can go out for 24+ hours, this is table stakes — and the solar and crank inputs mean it stays online long after your phone doesn’t.
