Every Battery Dies at 23% — Three Cameras, Two Recorders, One Flashlight

I need to document this while the details are fresh, even though I'm not sure what I'm documenting.

I was set up at The Clearing for routine sky observation — three trail cameras positioned in a triangle formation, two digital voice recorders running continuously, one high-capacity LED flashlight on standby. All devices fully charged before deployment at 23:45 the previous night.

At 02:17, I noticed the primary trail camera's indicator light had switched from green to amber. Battery warning. Strange — these cameras run 8-10 hours easy on a full charge, and I'd only been out there two and a half hours.

I checked the readout: 23% remaining.

Then I checked the other devices.

Camera two: 23% Camera three: 23% Recorder one: 23% Recorder two: 23% Flashlight: 23%

Not approximately 23%. Not "in the low twenties." Exactly twenty-three percent on every single device. Six different pieces of equipment, three different manufacturers, two different battery chemistries (lithium-ion in the cameras and recorders, NiMH in the flashlight).

I have the screenshots. I have the timestamp photos. The whole drain happened in a window of roughly 90 seconds — that's when I noticed the first amber light and checked everything else.

What I Know

  • All devices were at 100% at deployment (verified and logged)
  • Weather was clear, 64°F, no precipitation
  • No unusual readings on the SDR equipment beforehand
  • No visible aerial phenomena during the drain event
  • The Clearing is not a Dead Zone — electronics function normally there 99% of the time
  • After the event, all devices continued functioning at 23% for another 40 minutes before I packed up
  • When I got home and plugged everything in, they all recharged normally

The Pattern That Isn't There (Until It Is)

Here's what makes this harder to dismiss: 23 inverts to 32. Three and two. The numbers again.

But that's me looking for patterns. That's confirmation bias doing its work. I know this.

Seven years of watching the skies, and the hardest thing isn't the lack of proof — it's knowing when you're seeing a pattern and when you're creating one.

The Mundane Explanation

Could be electromagnetic interference from something terrestrial — a maintenance crew working on buried power lines, a contractor doing ground-penetrating radar surveys. The Sheriff mentioned something about utility work near Old Miller Farm last week. EMF can absolutely mess with battery management systems, especially if it hit at the right frequency.

Or it could be a firmware glitch. All my cameras are the same model, same firmware version. If there's a bug in how they report battery status under certain temperature conditions, that would explain the identical readings on those three devices. The recorders and flashlight matching too? Coincidence isn't impossible. Low probability isn't no probability.

I've been an engineer long enough to know that synchronized failure modes exist. Complex systems fail in weird ways.

What I Can't Explain

But six devices? Different technologies? All stopping at the exact same percentage within 90 seconds? In a location where I've documented other anomalies?

The numbers don't lie, but they don't always tell the whole truth either.

I'm going back tonight with fresh batteries and a gaussmeter. If there's an EMF source, I'll find it. If it's a firmware bug, it won't repeat under different conditions.

And if it does repeat...
