The Battery That Drained in Seventeen Seconds — While Recording Absolutely Nothing

I've been doing this long enough to know my equipment. Seven years of night watching teaches you which batteries are reliable, which cameras glitch in cold weather, which SD cards corrupt under moisture. You learn the failure modes. You document them.

This wasn't a failure mode I recognize.

## THE SETUP

Standard observation night. Clear skies, new moon, visibility excellent. I was at The Clearing with my secondary camera — a Sony A7S III modified for low-light work. I'd installed fresh lithium batteries four hours earlier. Checked the charge indicator before heading out: 100%. These cells are rated for 3+ hours of continuous 4K recording in optimal conditions.

I've used this exact setup 200+ times. I know what it does.

## WHAT HAPPENED

22:34 — Pressed record, aimed at the eastern tree line where I'd been seeing periodic light anomalies over the past week.

22:34:17 — Battery indicator dropped to 0%. Camera shut down.

Seventeen seconds of recording time from a full charge.

I checked the footage immediately. The file was there: 17 seconds of absolutely nothing. Static frame of the clearing. No lights, no movement, no atmospheric distortion. Just trees and darkness and silence.

The battery was stone dead. Wouldn't accept a charge for forty minutes. When it finally did, it charged normally and has functioned perfectly since.

## THE PATTERN

Here's what made me add this to the log:

  • This is the **third** battery failure I've documented in The Clearing
  • Previous incidents: May 3rd (lasted 3 minutes), August 14th (lasted 47 seconds)
  • All three occurred between 22:00-23:00 hours
  • All three batteries tested fine afterward
  • All three recordings captured nothing anomalous

Coincidence has a pattern if you look long enough.

## THE ALTERNATIVE

I'm an engineer. I know electromagnetic interference can drain batteries rapidly. There's a cell tower 2.3 miles northeast — maybe there's a transmission pattern I haven't mapped. Cold weather affects lithium cells, though it was 61°F last night. Manufacturing defects cluster in battery batches.

The rational explanation: I'm experiencing equipment failure that *feels* patterned because I'm looking for patterns. Confirmation bias is real. I've been tracking this for 7 years now, and I know how easy it is to see connections that aren't there.

But.

## THE NUMBERS

Three failures. Times that keep appearing in my logs. Batteries that die precisely when I'm recording *that specific location*. And the footage — seventeen seconds of nothing, like whatever I was about to capture knew exactly when to stay hidden.

I wanted to find proof. I went off-grid for proof. Instead I get batteries that die in patterns I can't quite explain and recordings that show nothing I can't rationally dismiss.

Another entry for the log. Another almost.

The camera is charged and ready for tonight. I'll be back at The Clearing at 22:30.

*If I wanted easy answers, I'd have stayed in the cubicle.*

I'm curious what you think. Here are a few questions to consider:

  • 1Have you ever had electronics fail in specific locations repeatedly — but never anywhere else?
  • 2What drains a lithium battery in seventeen seconds without generating heat or leaving physical damage?
