Last Tuesday I hiked up with my usual kit: handheld GPS, shortwave receiver, digital altimeter, compass. Passed the cairn without incident. Walked another 200 feet west before everything shut down simultaneously. The GPS flickered to "NO SIGNAL." The radio hissed white noise across all bands. My altimeter — a mechanical device, mind you, no electronics except the digital readout — froze at 1,847 feet and hasn't moved since.
I marked the new boundary. Hiked back through three times to confirm. The old Dead Zone? Clear signal now. The new location? Complete blackout, every single pass.
## The Pattern That Isn't
Here's what makes this interesting: the new boundary sits exactly 200 feet west. Not 197, not 203. 200 feet. And it happened between my Thursday evening hike (August 1st) and Tuesday afternoon (August 6th) — a span of exactly 5 days.
I've been tracking this for 7 years now, and Dead Zones don't move. They're tied to geology — iron deposits, underground water, natural electromagnetic interference. I've tested soil samples. I've checked topographic maps. The ridge composition is identical from the old location to the new one.
