I've been running the same setup at The Clearing for seven years now. Modified Nikon D850, infrared filter removed, 30-second exposures on a loop. Battery backup. Weatherproof housing. The whole nine yards. In those seven years, I've captured deer, owls, satellites, the occasional helicopter, and more false positives than I care to count.
Three nights ago, something different happened.
## THE OBSERVATION
I was inside reviewing shortwave logs when the motion sensor pinged. Not unusual — wildlife trips it constantly. What was unusual: the brightness alert triggered simultaneously. The system only does that when ambient light exceeds 800 lux, roughly the brightness of a cloudy day.
At 2:47 AM.
I pulled up the live feed. The clearing was dark again. Normal. But the timestamp showed the alert had lasted 2.4 seconds.
I pulled the footage.
## WHAT THE CAMERA CAUGHT
Frame 1 (02:47:13): Normal night vision, clearing visible in infrared.
Frame 2 (02:47:14): Complete white saturation. Entire sensor overloaded.
Frame 3 (02:47:15): Partial recovery, strange vertical streaking.
Frame 4 (02:47:16): Back to normal. Like nothing happened.
The metadata shows the camera's auto-exposure fought to compensate — aperture slammed shut, ISO dropped to minimum, shutter speed maxed. It still wasn't enough. Whatever lit up that clearing was *bright*.
But here's what keeps me up: no heat signature before or after.
The thermal overlay I run parallel to the optical feed? Nothing. No heat bloom, no residual warming of the ground, no dissipating thermal plume. The light appeared, saturated everything, and vanished without a trace of thermal energy.
The numbers don't lie, but they don't always tell the whole truth either.

- **Direction**: Overhead, diffuse (no point source visible)

- **Military**: Fort Campbell is 140 miles west — too far for standard exercises to cause this
## WHAT IT COULD BE
I'm not going to pretend there isn't a mundane explanation. There always is.
Lightning: Ground flash could explain the brightness and duration. But the weather was clear, and lightning produces a distinctive thermal signature from ionized air. This didn't.
Meteor: A bolide (exploding meteor) can create intense light without heat reaching the ground. But those typically last under a second, and I've photographed meteors before — they leave trails. This was diffuse, sourceless.
Military flare: Illumination flares burn at 2 million candela and last 30-60 seconds. This was brighter but shorter. And flares descend on parachutes — the camera would've caught movement before and after. Nothing.
Equipment malfunction: Maybe the sensor glitched. Except the backup camera 50 feet away recorded the same thing. Both cameras. Same timestamp. Same duration.
I've been tracking this for 7 years now. I know what a false positive looks like. I know what equipment failure looks like. I know what meteors, flares, and lightning look like.
This wasn't any of those things.
But I also can't tell you what it *was*.
## THE PATTERN
I went back through the logs. The Clearing has had three other brightness alerts in the past 24 months:
- March 17th, 2025 — 03:14 local (1.8 seconds)
- October 17th, 2025 — 02:53 local (2.1 seconds)
- May 17th, 2026 — 03:01 local (2.3 seconds)
All between 02:47 and 03:14. All lasting between 1.8 and 2.4 seconds. All on the 17th of the month — except this one, which happened on August 3rd.
August 3rd is the 17th day after July 17th.
Coincidence has a pattern if you look long enough.
## WHAT I'M ASKING
I'm not claiming proof of anything. After all these years, I know better. But I'm also not dismissing what the equipment recorded. Two cameras don't glitch identically. Clear skies don't produce lightning. And whatever caused this left light without heat — which shouldn't be possible for any conventional source I know.
Maybe someone with better equipment, better training, or better luck can tell me what I'm missing. Maybe this is exactly what it looks like: another almost. Another entry for the log. Another night where close isn't proof.
But close keeps happening.
