The Hum Returned at 3:17 AM — And This Time, I Recorded It

03:17 local time. The Hum is back.

I woke to it — that deep, pulsing drone that sits right at the edge of hearing. The one that makes your chest vibrate before your ears register sound. I've been documenting this phenomenon since 2019, but it went silent last November. Seven months of nothing.

Until last night.

This time I was ready. The digital audio recorder has been sitting on my nightstand for weeks, set to trigger on low-frequency input. It caught 47 minutes of audio before the Hum stopped at 04:04.

## What I Heard (In Real Time)

A steady pulse. Roughly 2-second intervals. Frequency somewhere between 40-60 Hz — too low for most people to hear clearly, but I've always been sensitive to bass frequencies. My engineering days included a lot of time in testing chambers, and my hearing got trained to pick up subsonic rumble.

The pattern was consistent. No variation. No doppler shift. Just that steady, mechanical throb that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere.

I went outside. The Hum was louder near the treeline — noticeably so. Walked down toward the creek. Fainter there. Back toward the house, louder again. I spent twenty minutes trying to triangulate a source direction.

Couldn't pin it down.

## What the Recorder Caught

This is where it gets strange.

The audio file shows the low-frequency signal clearly. Spectral analysis puts the fundamental at 52 Hz — right in my estimated range. But when I play it back, there's something else underneath. A second layer. Almost like a... rhythm beneath the rhythm.

I've run the file through every filter I have. The secondary pattern appears at irregular intervals — 17 seconds apart, then 34, then 17 again. Always multiples of 17. Another entry for the log.

But here's what bothers me: I didn't hear that second layer in real time. Only in playback.

## The Mundane Explanation

I have to be honest with myself here. I've been tracking this for 7 years now, and I know better than to jump to conclusions.

Industrial equipment is the obvious answer. There's a natural gas compressor station about 11 miles northeast. They run 24/7. Large diesel generators produce frequencies in this exact range. The atmospheric conditions last night — temperature inversion, high humidity — could have created a perfect acoustic channel to carry that sound across the valley.

The "second layer" in the recording? Could be harmonic interference from my own equipment. The recorder pulls power from a USB battery pack. Switch-mode power supplies create electrical noise. At low frequencies, that noise can bleed into audio circuits.

The 17-second pattern? Might be the compressor station's duty cycle. Industrial equipment runs on timers. Coincidence has a pattern if you look long enough — I know that better than anyone.

## What Doesn't Fit

But.

The Hum stopped at 04:04. Not 04:00. Not 04:05. 04:04 — which is 244 minutes after midnight. 244 divided by 17 is 14.35. Close, but not clean.

And if it's the compressor station, why did the Hum go silent for seven months? Those facilities don't shut down for maintenance cycles that long.

I've called the station before — back in 2021. They were polite. Confirmed they run continuously. Offered to send me their maintenance schedule. I never got it.

Old Harold heard it too. He called this morning, asked if I'd been up late. Said it woke him around 3:30. He's 4 miles south of me. If the compressor is the source, the sound would have to carry across significantly different terrain to reach both of us with that intensity.

## Where This Leaves Me

I have 47 minutes of audio. I have spectral analysis. I have a witness who heard the same thing at roughly the same time.

I also have a perfectly reasonable explanation that accounts for 90% of what happened.

It's that remaining 10% that keeps me up. The pattern that only appeared in playback. The timing. The selective geography of where it was loudest.

The numbers don't lie, but they don't always tell the whole truth either.

I'm uploading the audio file to the server tonight. Cleaned up, normalized, but otherwise unprocessed. If anyone has experience with acoustic analysis or industrial equipment signatures, I'd welcome a second set of ears.

Seven months of silence, and then this. If I wanted easy answers, I'd have stayed in the cubicle.
