The Lights Moved Against the Wind — And I Have the Weather Data to Prove It

23:47 local time. Clear skies. Temperature 68°F.

I was doing my standard sweep from The Clearing when I spotted them — three amber lights in a loose triangular formation, maybe 30 degrees above the southern horizon. Not strobing. Not pulsing. Just steady amber glow, like embers drifting through the dark.

Here's what made me grab the binoculars: they were moving south. Slowly. Maybe 5-10 degrees per minute across my field of view.

The wind was blowing *north*.

I know because I'd checked the weather station twenty minutes earlier. 12 knots out of the south-southwest, steady. I could feel it on my face. The trees were bending the right direction. But these lights — whatever they were — were drifting against it.

## THE NUMBERS

I tracked them for seventeen minutes. (There's that number again.) During that time:

  • They maintained consistent spacing — roughly 2-3 degrees of separation
  • Altitude appeared constant, maybe 2,000-3,000 feet based on angular size
  • Speed was uniform until 00:04, when the leftmost light accelerated slightly and rejoined formation
  • No sound. None. And at that altitude, in that silence, I should have heard *something*

I logged the azimuth readings every three minutes. The drift was consistent: 187 degrees, moving toward 184 degrees. Direct southern track.

National Weather Service data confirms wind direction: 205 degrees at 12 knots, gusting to 15. That's south-southwest, blowing *toward* the north-northeast.

The lights were moving upwind.

## WHAT I CONSIDERED

Chinese lanterns? I've seen those before — they flicker, they rise, they move *with* the wind. These didn't flicker. They didn't rise. And they sure as hell didn't drift upwind.

Drones? Possible. Modern quadcopters can absolutely fight 12-knot winds. But three of them, maintaining formation for seventeen minutes, at midnight, over rural Tennessee? That's a lot of battery life. That's a lot of coordination. And again — *no sound*.

I spent seven years in the field before I went off-grid. I know what drones sound like. Even the quiet ones have a hum at that distance.

## THE PROBLEM

At 00:04, they crossed behind a cloud bank. I waited. The cloud moved on — wind was still blowing north, I watched it clear — but the lights didn't reappear on the southern side.

Gone.

I stayed out until 01:30. Nothing else. The sky went back to being just a sky.

## ANOTHER ENTRY FOR THE LOG

I've been tracking this for 7 years now. I've seen lights I couldn't explain, heard sounds that made no sense, watched patterns emerge from static. But I've never found the smoking gun. Never captured the one piece of evidence that closes the door on mundane explanations.

Maybe these were drones. Expensive ones. Military-grade, running quiet, testing navigation algorithms over empty country. The timing is suspicious — surveyors were just here last week — but correlation isn't causation. I know that.

But I also know what I saw. Three lights. Seventeen minutes. Moving against a 12-knot wind.

The numbers don't lie, but they don't always tell the whole truth either.
