The Returns — Cycle 7

They came back. Right on schedule.

I've been tracking what I call "The Returns" for five months now. Lights that appear over The Clearing at predictable intervals. Every 23 days, give or take a few hours. This was Cycle 7.

I predicted the window within a four-hour range. They appeared at 2:17 AM on the nose—right in the middle of my predicted window. Three lights again, same triangle formation as Cycle 1. Same northeast approach. Same silent hover.

This time I was ready. Night-vision camera on manual focus, taped focus ring, fresh battery, new SD card. SDR recording. Secondary camera on a wider angle as backup.

And the primary camera auto-focused on the tree line.

I know what you're thinking. I said the focus ring was taped. It was. But the camera has an electronic override that kicks in when it detects high contrast edges. The tree line against the sky was the highest contrast edge in the frame. The camera overrode my tape and hunted.

The backup camera was too wide. The lights are visible in the footage but they're maybe three pixels across. You can see them move, you can see the formation, but you can't see detail.

I have a confirmed prediction. Cycle 7 arrived within my window, at the expected time, with the expected formation. That's seven data points on a 23-day interval. The probability of that being random is low.

But here's the honest part: military refueling routes follow schedules. Tanker aircraft on regular runs could explain a 23-day cycle. The Air Force does cycle their refueling patterns, and the routes over eastern Tennessee are known. The triangle formation could be three aircraft holding station around a tanker.

Could be military refueling on a schedule. Could be the camera is just cursed. Could be I'm the unluckiest sky watcher in Tennessee.

But seven cycles. Twenty-three days each. Predicted in advance. Whatever this is, it's not random.

Cycle 8 should arrive around February 7th. I'm building a camera rig that has no electronic override. Full manual everything. If they come back, I'll be ready.

I'm curious what you think. Here are a few questions to consider:

  • 1Can anyone verify military refueling schedules over eastern TN?
  • 2What are the odds of seven consecutive 23-day intervals being coincidence?
  • 3Why does every camera system fail at the critical moment?
