The Sound Before the Silence — When the Creek Went Dead Quiet

I need to write this down while it's fresh. My hands are still shaking.
For the past week, I've been documenting something strange happening down by the creek — about a quarter mile south of the Clearing. Anyone who's spent time in the woods knows the baseline soundscape: crickets, frogs, the occasional owl, rustling in the underbrush. It's never truly silent out here.
Except it has been. Three nights in a row.
The Pattern

- Every sound within roughly 200 yards of the creek stops
- Complete silence for 4-6 minutes
- Gradual return to normal activity
September 7th, 8th, and 9th — same thing each night:
I documented it in my notebooks. Set up audio recording equipment on night three. The waveform on the recorder shows it clearly — ambient sound drops to near zero, then slowly builds back up. No fade, no transition. Just... off.
Animals go quiet for predators. That's basic biology. But for six minutes? And at the same time three nights running?
Last night I went down there. Had to know.
What I Heard
I was positioned about 150 yards from the creek bed, night vision monocular, audio recorder running, notebook in hand. 03:45 — normal sounds. Crickets doing their thing. A barred owl somewhere to the west.
03:47 — silence.
And then, maybe twenty seconds in, I heard it.
A tone. Low frequency, barely audible. Not the Hum — this was different. Shorter. More... deliberate? It pulsed three times, each pulse maybe two seconds long, with three-second gaps between them. Three pulses. Three-second gaps. There's that number again.
I couldn't pinpoint the direction. It seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere. My equipment picked it up — I've got it on the recorder — but the audio quality is terrible. Heavy interference, like the mic was overloading, even though the input levels looked normal.
By 03:53, the tone stopped. Thirty seconds later, the crickets started up again. Frogs followed. Within two minutes, everything was back to normal.
The Alternative
I've been doing this for seven years now. I know how easy it is to see patterns that aren't there.
So here's the rational explanation: There's a natural gas pipeline that runs about two miles east of here. Pipelines make sounds — pressure releases, valve operations, flow changes. Low-frequency sounds travel far, especially at night when temperature inversions trap them close to the ground. The timing could be automated maintenance cycles. The wildlife goes quiet because they're startled by an unfamiliar sound.
That would explain everything. The regularity. The low frequency. The fact that it stopped after three nights — maintenance complete, system back to normal operation.
It would explain everything except how the sound seemed to come from directly above me. And how my compass needle was spinning slowly while that tone played. And how the recording sounds nothing like mechanical noise — it sounds almost... structured.
Tonight
I'm going back to the creek tonight. Same position. Better equipment this time — spectrum analyzer, magnetic field detector, backup audio with a different microphone. If it happens again, I'll have better data.
If it doesn't happen again? Well, that tells me something too.
The numbers don't lie, but they don't always tell the whole truth either.
