I've been tracking aerial phenomena for seven years now, and formation lights aren't uncommon. Satellites in constellation, aircraft running exercises, even drones in coordinated flight. What made me grab my notebook was how perfectly still they held position.
The Wind Wasn't Still
Here's what matters: we had sustained winds of 15-18 mph last night with gusts hitting 25. I watched the pines bend. I felt it on my face. The wind was *real* and it was *strong*.
Those three lights didn't waver. Not once.
I timed them. Eleven minutes and forty-three seconds of absolute geometric precision while the atmosphere moved around them. My night-vision camera captured the whole sequence — branches whipping, clouds streaming past, and those three points locked in formation like they were bolted to the sky itself.

Then they separated.
All three. Same instant. I checked the footage frame-by-frame later — within 1/30th of a second, all three lights began moving in different directions. Northwest, northeast, and straight south. No hesitation, no drift, just immediate vector changes.
The movements were smooth, not the kind of angular shifts you get from aircraft banking. More like... sliding. They accelerated gradually, maintained brightness for another 20-30 seconds, then faded sequentially: south, northwest, northeast.
Gone by 22:47:12.
The Alternative I Can't Ignore
I spent this morning on the satellite tracking sites. Starlink had three satellites passing through that general area of sky around that time. The geometry's close — not perfect, but close. The thing is, satellites don't hover. They move continuously relative to ground observers.
But if the wind was creating an illusion of movement in my reference frame — the trees, the clouds — then maybe three satellites crossing my field of view could *appear* stationary by comparison? The break pattern doesn't match predicted trajectories exactly, but satellite tracking databases aren't always precise to the second.
It's plausible. Uncomfortable, but plausible.
What The Numbers Say
I ran the math three different ways this morning. The satellite explanation requires assuming a 2-3 minute error in the tracking data and a perceptual illusion on my part. Not impossible. I'm human. My brain fills in patterns.
But eleven minutes of perfect formation through heavy wind? The synchronized break? Those three lights moving like they were receiving the same command at the same instant?
The signal-to-noise ratio is getting worse. Every time I think I'm close to something I can't explain away, there's a mundane answer that *almost* fits. Almost isn't proof. I know that. But almost keeps happening.
