Three Nights, Three Returns — The Clearing Recorded What I Couldn't See

I check my trail cameras every Monday. Force of habit from years of watching — you document everything, even when nothing happens. Especially when nothing happens.
The Clearing's camera sits mounted on an oak at the meadow's edge, facing north toward the ridgeline. Standard setup: motion-activated, infrared capable, thermal overlay enabled. I've had it there for four years. Mostly it catches deer, the occasional coyote, one memorable black bear last spring.
Monday's SD card had three clips from the weekend. All three triggered at exactly 03:17 — Saturday, Sunday, Monday. Military time. Not 03:16 or 03:18. Exactly 03:17.
In each clip, something crosses the frame from west to east. The motion sensor trips. The infrared activates. But the thermal overlay shows nothing. No heat signature. Just the cold signature of the January meadow, undisturbed grass, frost patterns on the ground.
Except the regular camera sees *something*. A disturbance. The grass moves in a line, like something's pushing through it. Six-foot-wide path, consistent speed, takes maybe eight seconds to cross the frame.
What the Data Shows

I've been tracking this for 7 years now. The Returns follow patterns — I know that much. But this is the first time I've caught three consecutive events on camera with this level of precision.
The thermal is what bothers me. If it's an animal, even a cold-blooded one, I should see *something*. A temperature differential. A heat bloom. But there's nothing. Just the grass moving and the motion sensor doing its job.
The Alternative
I'm an engineer. I check my equipment before I check the sky.
The thermal overlay could be malfunctioning — it's a $300 consumer camera, not military-grade hardware. If the infrared and thermal sensors are out of sync by even a few milliseconds, you could get exactly this: motion detection working fine, thermal reading empty space.
Or it's wind. Ground-level wind patterns can be strange in that meadow. The Ridge creates a funnel effect. I've seen it push frost in weird directions. But wind doesn't explain the timing. Wind doesn't care about 03:17.
Or something crossed the frame that's exactly ambient temperature. Perfectly temperature-matched to the frozen meadow. For three nights in a row.
Another Entry for the Log
I replaced the camera yesterday. New unit, same position, same settings. I'll know in a week if it happens again.
The numbers don't lie, but they don't always tell the whole truth either. Three nights. Three events. Same time. Same path. No thermal signature.
I've spent seven years looking for proof, and I still don't have it. Maybe I never will. But I also can't explain why the grass moves when nothing's there.
